Rohtas Mahila College, Sasaram is the brain child of the then DM Mr. S.N. P. N. Sinha who made herculean effort to mobilize the educationists, businessman, beaurourrats, intellectuals and prominent citizens of the locality to a single platform to deal with the issues emerging out of the alarming rate illiteracy among the girls of the region. During the deliberation a consensus was emerged among them that the only remedy to this growing menace is to set up an institution catering to their interest who are largely marginalized and no longer contribute significantly for the betterment of society for want of formal education. His dream soon a acquired a concrete shape and Rohtas Mahila College Came into existence in the year 1975 on the 2nd of October to mark the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi who himself championed the cause of women and ensured their active participation during freedom movement. Initially the college functioned in 6-room rented building but later on two large halls were constructed to meet the growing number of students taking keen interest in getting themselves enrolled. Still it was not possible to accommodate a large gathering inside the premises of the old campus. Then to the active co-operation of the then water resources minister Sri Jagdanand Singh and the then Vice Chancellor Dr. Surendra Nath Singh and the tireless efforts of the students of this college a tract of land was allotted to us in the heart of the town in 1994 thus fulfill in our long cherished demand. A Sprawling building was erected in the new campus to accommodate the large gathering. Since then the college is functioning smoothly and making progress by leaps and bound.
Initially academic activities were carried out with 23 students and teachers which picked up gradually in the next session with the member of students bounced to 150. A door-to-campaign was launched to gear up the residents of the locality to join the massive literacy drive and get the girls admitted. The campaign received a positive response with students making a beeline to get themselves enrolled. The administration too swung into action allotting a small tract of land to accommodate the huge gathering acknowledging the long-awaited demand of the students and teaching and non-teaching fraternity as well. Initially the college had to face huge financial crunch to erect a building on tract of land allotted to it to meet the growing demand of the students. An appeal was made to the people to contribute generously for this noble cause. It soon paid dividend with people from different walks of life expending a helping hand to see the dream project acquiring a concrete shape. Prominent among those who contributed significantly include former Lok sabha speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar and parliamentarians Mrs. Kanti Singh and Mr. Chhedi Paswan. By the active cooperation of the respectable citizens of the locality the institution, first among the girls colleges falling inside the territory of Bihar from its boundary touching UP in the west and stretching upto Jharkhand in the east. Our journey still continues unabated since we have just stood erect on our feet. We have still to cover a long distance. We are craving for P.G. classes in various subjects, hostel facility for the girls, computer courses and adequate communication facility for girls which are given top priority in our agenda. Girls coming from far-off regions have to face immense hardships in order to come to the college for want of adequate communication facility. Therefore we are seriously considering providing bus facility to the students to redress their problem. It will also help the institution kill two birds with a single shot. Besides providing communication facility the institution will ensures the safety and security of the students which is also our prime concern.
